Nanning-Hanoi economic corridor discussed

The Nanning-Hanoi economic corridor is an important segment of the Nanning-Singapore economic corridor and one of the key elements of the China-Vietnam “two corridors – one economic belt” programme.

The view was shared by scientists at a seminar jointly held in Hanoi on July 9 by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and the Guangxi Academy of Social Sciences.

Co-operation can start with transportation and tourism, said participants, adding that the two countries should open a non-stop railway and road, exempt visas at the border, build warehouses, and apply a one-door quarantine mechanism.

They suggested that Vietnam and China also devise a joint tourism plan that links scenic areas and open a trans-national tourist route that will encourage travelers to drive across the border to visit the interior of the neighbouring country.

Rail lines and roads along the corridor are in good condition so Nanning, Guangxi, Hanoi, and all the provinces along the corridor should establish a co-operative mechanism for maintaining them, they said.

The 300km international railway line from Nanning to Hanoi has been in operation since early 2009, but due to a 13-hour trip duration, there have been a few passengers. If the two sides agree to streamline immigration procedures in Nanning and Hanoi and not stop trains at the border, the trip will take only 3-4 hours.
