Local power firm seeks autonomy

City authorities have proposed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade that the local power supply company be granted more investment and purchasing autonomy.

In a proposal submitted to the ministry, the city’s Department of Industry and Trade said that greater autonomy would allow the company to make use of all available sources of power that Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) had not tapped.

The local power company could invest in high-capacity generators as well as new sources of energy like solar or wind energy, the department said.

The city could also implement many measures to save power and prioritise power supply according to the needs of residents and businesses, it added.

City residents have been frustrated over the two blackouts per week they have had to endure over the last fortnight.

The department said HCM City had suffered from a chronic shortage of electricity because of reduced allocation from EVN.

The city needs 53 million kWh per day but it has only received 42.6 million kWh from EVN per day this week. — VNS
