Largest container terminal slated
Gemadept Corporation and container shipping group CMA-CGM, have joined forces to construct the biggest container terminal in the southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province’s Cai Mep deep sea port complex.
Gernadept Corporation, through its subsidiaries Gernadept Vung Tau and VNM Transport and CMA-CGM’s 100%-owned TerminalLink, last week set up a 50/50 joint venture to build and operate the Gernalink Cai Mep Container Terminal.
The project’s first phase is expected to cost $300 million and will start in August this year and be completed by the end of 2013.
According to Do Van Minh, chair of Cai Mep Gemadept- TerminalLink (GML) Port Joint Stock Company cum general director of Gernadept, the first phase will feature a main quay of 800 metres for mother ships and a barge quay of 260m on a ground space of 33 hectares.
The annual capacity of the port will be 1.2 million TEUs. The second phase will be continued afterwards with a total area of 72ha, expanding the main quay up to l,150m and a barge quay up to 370m for a total annual capacity of
2.4 million TEUs. The total investment capital for this phase is estimated to cost $100 million.
“The terminal will be the biggest facility in the Cai Mep deep sea port area, as even in the first phase its size will already be bigger than the size of four existing neighbouring terminals,” Minh said.
The completed GML terminal would have the longest quays of 1,520rn, while the other three neighbouring terminals had only 600m quays, Minh said.
