Japanese trade minister to visit Vietnam to promote nuke power

Trade minister Masayuki Naoshima said Friday he plans to visit Vietnam next week to back up business efforts to win orders for Japanese nuclear power technology from the Southeast Asian nation.

During the four-day trip from Tuesday, the economy, trade and industry minister intends to encourage Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi to engage Japanese companies in construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.

Some top officials of Japanese electric power companies and nuclear power plant makers will join the meeting in the Vietnamese capital, ministry officials said.

In the central Vietnamese city of Danang, Naoshima will attend a meeting of economic ministers from Japan and the five Mekong countries of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam to discuss regional development as well as a series of conferences related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
