Japan, Vietnam increase cooperation in ship building
Japan and Vietnam have a good opportunity to cooperate in ship building as the world’s second largest economy is showing signs of recovery and Vietnam has great potential to offer in the industry, says a Vietnamese official.
Vietnam’s investment counselor in Japan, Le Huu Quang Huy, made the statement at a conference on the ship building industry held by Kanto Industry and Information (KII) in Tokyo on June 18.
Counselor Huy stressed that with a coastline of more than 3,200km, about 120 seaports and a young and skilled workforce, Vietnam has the potential for developing the industry while Japan has large capital resources and nearly 1,200 shipyards and 1,200 seaports. In addition, he said the Northeast Asian economy has gradually climbed back from the global economic turmoil and is forecast to reach a growth rate of 1.9 percent this year.
He also pointed out challenges that the Vietnamese ship building industry has to face and called on both countries’ businesses to increase their meetings to discuss opportunities for cooperation and to iron out snags.
Businesses in both countries should work together in human resources training, environment pollution treatment at shipyards, and developing subsidiary industries for ship building.
Also at the conference, Nagatsuka Seiji, an expert in marine analysis, proposed a number of solutions to help Japanese shipyards cope with the fierce competition from rivals in the regions such as the Republic of Korea and China by cooperating with India, Vietnam and the Philippines.
