Internet TV users to rise 5 times: VNPT
Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has forecast the number of its Internet TV customers will increase five times within the next five years.
“The number of Internet television subscribers will likely increase five times by 2015. At present, MyTV service attracts over 500,000 subscribers nationwide,” said Nguyen Nguyet Phuong, project manager of VASC Software and Media Co. under VNPT.
Vietnam now has three Internet TV providers namely VNPT, FPT and Viettel with a total number of 600,000 subscribers. VNPT obtains a lion’s share of the Internet TV market with over 500,000 subscribers while FPT has 50,000-70,000 subscribers and Viettel tens of thousands.
The country has 3.5 million broadband Internet users, which are considered as potential clients of Internet TV service. The number of Internet TV users will grow sharply in the near future owing to heavy investments made by service operators and the soaring number of broad-band Internet users.
Unlike other pay TV services such as digital TV or cable TV, Internet TV enables a wide range of services on the same network and allows the transfer of advertisements to certain customers.
Moreover, it offers other services like movies on demand, karaoke or even video calling in the future.
However, the main drawback of Internet TV is that it only works on a high-speed broadband system. The quality of this service will go down when Internet connection slows or drops.
