Int’l tourist arrivals to Hanoi +12% to 550,000 so far this year

Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi is estimated to have welcomed more than 550,000 international visitors so far this year, up 12% from a year earlier, said the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

This is the first time in 2010 the city has reported the increase of foreign visitors, according to the ministry.

The increase is attributed to various tourism events and festivals being held in Hanoi, especially the grand celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the National Tourism Year 2010, it added.

Most visitors come from Germany (104,900, up four times), China (76,600, up 32%), France (59.100, up 32%), Japan (50,900, up 20%), Australia (46,400, up 7%), the U.S. (31,900, up 1%) and the U.K. (31,900, up 20%).

Hanoi welcomed around one million international travelers in 2009, down 20% on year. The city aims to greet 1.5 million foreign tourists this year.

At present, the number of foreign tourists to Hanoi accounts for 33% of the country’s total.
