Hydropower plants face severe water shortages

Hydroelectric plants in the South and in the Central Highlands region are facing severe water shortages.

The Pleikrong Hydropower Plant in Kon Tum Province is operational one to two hours per day to reserve water for the next dry season. There have been days when the plant has had to cease operations, said Dinh Van Hau – the plant’s hydrographer.

The water level at the plant’s reservoir was just a little higher than the critical level, he said, adding that this was the worst shortage in 50 years.

The Yaly Hydropower Plant in Gia Lai Province is also experiencing water shortages, while its water level was 4m higher than the reservoir’s critical level.

In the past, the plant’s two reservoirs are typically full of water starting in September, said Yaly Hydropower official Ta Van Luan.

Severe drought this year the has made it difficult for Ham Thuan Hydropower Plant in Lam Dong Province to operate.

The plant’s total power generation output during the first nine months of the year was equal to 68.3 per cent of the power generated during the same period last year.-VNS
