Hanoi Hosts Asia Conference on Selecting Locations for Nuclear Power Projects

Dozens of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and 12 regional countries are gathering at a five-day Asian conference on assessing and selecting locations for nuclear power projects opened in Hanoi June 7.

Addressing the meeting, IAEA officials introduced a safety standard system for nuclear energy as well as current international regulations on licensing nuclear power projects, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.

Regional nations have exchanged experience in assessing and selecting locations for their nuclear power projects at the five-day event.

Last November, Vietnam’s National Assembly, the country’s highest legislative body, approved construction of first two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW in the central province of Ninh Thuan.

The nation is seeking suitable locations to build between eight and ten more nuclear power plants through 2030.
