Food prices in Hanoi shoot up

At major markets including Hang Be, Kim Lien, Thanh Cong and Lang Ha, meat rose 15-20 percent in price.  Chicken rose from VND145,000  to VND160,000 a kilo while beef jumped from VND140,000 to VND160,000 a kilo.

Pork prices increased by VND10,000 a kilo while 10 eggs jumped from VND25,000 to VND28,000.

The demand for pork legs is expected to rise as 2010 is the Year of the Tiger according to the tradition and people will use pork for praying on New Year’s Eve rather than the customary chicken. The pork leg price will rise at least to VND100,000 a kilo.
