Final section of City tunnel ready for installation today

The fourth and final section of the Thu Thiem Tunnel passing under the Sai Gon River was placed in the right position for the installation that will take place today.

Deputy Chairman of HCM City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Tai, officials from the city’s Department of Transport and 24 related agencies yesterday morning attended a brief ceremony to begin the transport of the final section from southern Dong Nai Province’s Nhon Trach District, where all the sections were fabricated.

The section was towed through 22km from Nha Be to Sai Gon River, passing through the districts of Nha Be, 7, 4, 2 and 1.

Good weather conditions were a factor that helped in successful completion of the task ahead of schedule.

The section was carried to the Nha Rong Wharf by noon, and will be installed tomorrow morning. All marine transportation has been suspended in the vicinity until the tunnel section is installed successfully.

The preparatory work for today’s installation, the most challenging and important phase of the tunnel construction, was also completed ahead of schedule.

It was an amazing coincidence, the tunnel section will be installed at the same spot from where President Ho Chi Minh left Viet Nam to explore ways to liberate the country 99 years ago, but also on the same date – June 5.

With the rest of the pre-fabricated tunnel sections in place, there is a space of just 1.25 metres for engineers to manoeuvre the last one into place.

According to the East-West Highway and Water Environment Project’s management Board, after installing the fourth section, an inspection will be carried out the next day.

The connection of the fourth tunnel section to the approaching pass to District 1 will be done in 24 steps and four main phases from June to September this year — VNS
