European firms want to invest in Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry
European enterprises operating in the maritime sector from Netherlands, Norway and Germany want to cooperate with Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry in the future.
At the international exhibition on marine and shipbuilding equipments held in Vietnam 2011 in the morning March 9, Egil Resvik, technical and scientific advisor of Norway Innovation Co in South and Southeast Asia region, said the Norway’s shipbuilders are very interested in cooperating with Vietnamese shipbuilders because Vietnam has advantages to develop this industry.
Henk Lacet-consultant of the Holland Marine Equipment Association, said Vietnam is also benefiting from sea routes connecting directly with the US and Europe that have been opened recently. This will attract the investment from foreign maritime companies.
Deputy minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong said, now the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MoPI) has approved 23 seaport development projects under the form of public – private partnership (PP), with a total investment of $3.3 billion, of which, 12 projects of building seaports to increase the volume of cargo through the port to 500-600 million tonnes per year by 2015.
However, representatives of the European shipbuilders said that the poor infrastructure at seaports in Vietnam will be an obstacle for foreign investors.
