Electricity shortage to continue
Pressures on power shortage are increasing strongly due to unfavourable weather conditions, the progress of power projects still remains slow.
Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has officially called businesses to share the difficulties in electricity supply by using their own generators. With current unusual weather conditions, it’s likely that the appeal will no longer stop in waiting for the voluntary of businesses.
Dang Hoang An, EVN’s deputy general director, said that from April till the end of June, the power shortage would be 600 million kWh. Therefore, it’s necessary to control the national electricity consumption at less than 270 million kWh in April, and it would be less than 275 million kWh in May and 285 million kWh in June.
The current electricity shortage is also due to the slow progress of many existing power projects. The latest report announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) showed that amongst 35 existing power projects, only five of them have ensured the progress including Serepok 3 hydropower plant, Serepok 4 hydropower plant, Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant, Khe Bo hydropower and expanded Uong Bi thermo power plant.
Till date, 11 power projects under the BOT method are under negotiation period such as Nghi Son 2 (1,200 MW) and O Mon 2 (750 MW).
However, in order to speed up the progress of power projects, MoIT petitioned the government to urge Ministry of Finance, State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and giant investors like EVN, Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and other contractors to arrange enough capital for carrying out assigned projects.
