Dong Van Plateau officially joins Global Geoparks Network

Ha Giang province on December 1 held a ceremony to receive UNESCO’s recognition of the Dong Van Stone Plateau as a member of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN).

This is the second geopark in Southeast Asia and the first one in Vietnam admitted to the GGN.

The Dong Van Stone Plateau is located in four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac in the northernmost province of Ha Giang, at the altitude of 1,400-1,600m.

The plateau is a special limestone region with typical hallmarks of the earth’s crush, natural phenomena, and unique landscapes.

At the ceremony, secretary general of UNESCO Vietnam National Committee Pham Sanh Chau stressed that the recognition of the plateau as the world’s geopark would surely facilitate poverty reduction and socio-economic development in Ha Giang.
