Domains registered in Vietnamese

The exclusive online global domain name registrar, Dot VN Inc, began providing general registrations for Viet Nam’s native language internationalised domain name (Vietnamese IDN) on Thursday.

Registrations for the web domain will be available for free through Key-Systems worldwide and domestically at www.ten.vn. Owners of Vietnamese IDN will be allowed to have their own websites, hostings and email addresses at www.email.vn.

The launch of the Vietnamese domain name earmarked Viet Nam’s broader accession into online society, said Dot VN CEO Thomas Johnson.

It would allow the over 89 million native people and the estimated 3.7 million overseas Vietnamese, both existing as well as potential internet users, to claim their own piece of the internet in their native language, he added.

Nguyen Le Thuy from the Ministry of Information and Communications, said the launch of the Vietnamese IDN would develop strongly in both domestic and overseas markets in the future, making it an effective channel for domestic enterprises to market their products and seek trading opportunities. The latest data from the Information Centre showed that as of December 2010, there were over 26.7 million internet users, an increase of over 6,100 per cent in just 10 years. A current report, made by US website monitoring service Pingdom, showed that Viet Nam was rated among the top 20 countries with significant growth in internet usage.

The registration is part of the Ministry of Finance’s programme to provide a free Vietnamese IDN.

In the first phase from January 10 to April 27, State-owned companies and individuals with copyright certificates had first priority to use the domain.

The second part, which began on Thursday, focused on those with demand.

An individual could register and use five free Vietnamese IDNs, while an organisation is allowed 100 domain names, on a ‘first come, first serve” basis.

Tran Minh Tan, deputy director of the Information Centre, said the Ministry of Information and Communications had set up a team to supervise and control internet usage. — VNS
