Developing renewable energy in Vietnam

Vietnam hopes to generate 5 percent of its electric power from renewable energy sources by 2020.

Under the auspices of the International Exhibition on Renewable Energy, an International Conference on Renewable Energy was held in Hanoi on March 19 sponsored by the Munich International Trade Fair Group of Germany and the Vietnam Energy Institute (VEI).

The conference focused on three main issues related to renewable energy development: a legal framework for renewable energy development, opportunities and challenges, and renewable energy technology and research.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Thanh Bien says developing renewable energy is an important part of Vietnam’s sustainable development plan because it is a safe energy. Developing renewable energy will help to generate jobs and develop rural areas.

The Vietnamese Government is paying greater attention to developing renewable energy. In line with a 5-year strategy paper (with a vision for 2025) composed by VEI, the Government approved a target to increase the role of renewable energy in the country’s total energy strategy.
