Deputy PM hails innovative technology

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan highlighted the importance of global experiences and technologies in solving development challenges in Viet Nam at an international workshop in Ha Noi yesterday.

Nhan was speaking at the Inclusive Innovation – Global Experiences and Technologies Workshop, co-organised by the World Bank and the Global Research Alliance (GRA).

“Innovation and creation are always necessary factors for improving productivity and sustainable economic growth in countries. Innovation and creation also play important roles in job creation, raising incomes and poverty reduction,” said Nhan.

Viet Nam is still a developing country with a low income level for the region and the world. More than 70 per cent of the population live in rural areas and two-thirds of population depend on agriculture.

In order to escape from poverty, farmers had to adapt their production models to create high quality and low cost products that satisfy consumer demands. New varieties, new cultivation technologies, development of distribution chains and product value have been emerging as key tasks for farmers to become richer and smarter, said Nhan.

To accomplish this, the application of global innovations from international or local institutions and individuals would be mobilised in poor communities, he said.

The concept of inclusive innovation was to develop and deliver high performance products and solutions at low-cost to benefit low income individuals and communities through public and private sector initiatives, said Tunc Uyanik from the WB.

Uyanik also said the WB was currently working with the Ministry of Planning and Investment to prepare a project on inclusive innovation in Viet Nam.

As part of the WB’s Global Knowledge Transfer agenda, the event aims to enhance knowledge among participants on inclusive innovation technologies and their development by sharing case studies of successful inclusive innovation solutions in developing countries in order to address development challenges here. — VNS
