China pledges to fund Loc Ninh-Phnom Penh railway project

China has lately committed to offer funds for construction on railway project valued at $600 million connecting the Phnom Penh capital city of Cambodia and Loc Ninh Dist, Binh Phuoc Province in Vietnam. This is one of four railway segments of the pan-Asia rail link from Singapore to Kun Ming in southern China.

Addressing in the press conference last week, the Cambodian minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation Hor Namhong announced that Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen met and discuss about the fundings with his Chinese partner Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the 17th Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit held in Hanoi last weekend.

Hor Namhong quoted that Hun Sen officially requested China to offer financial support for building the railway from Phnom Penh to Vietnam with total length of 257 kilometres. At present, Chinese parties were funding for feasibility studies for this project.

The construction of this railway will not only benefit Cambodia, but also Asean members, particularly Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

The construction work for this project is expected to be completed by 2015.
