Fish farmers in Tan Chau town, An Giang, the biggest seafood production province in Vietnam, said that Basa catfish prices have rose up to VND24,000/kg, VND9,000/kg higher than cost of goods sold (COGS) and VND8,000/kg higher than the substitute fishes.

The higher price was due to higher domestic consumption demands and a shortage of supply. Basa catfish industry in the area has gone down since 1996.

In the peak time, catfish production in three areas of An Giang province, Chau Doc, An Phu, Tan Chau, reached 20,000 tons/year from more than 4,000 rafts of catfish. Currently, these areas have 100 rafts feeding catfish providing for the domestic market.
