Are artificial colored diamonds also forever?

For the last half a month, artificial colored diamonds have been offered for sale at many jewelry shops in HCM City. Many gemologists have commented that the so-called diamond is just a type of cubic zirconia.

In fact, artificial diamonds once appeared on the market, but only in white. Now, jewelry shops offer artificial diamond with different colors, from pink, violet, red, to orange. They claim that the products are imported from Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Belgium.

A jewelry shop owner in District 1 stated that artificial diamonds cannot be as valuable as natural diamonds, but their colour, shape and clarity look like real diamonds, so they are favored by clients like Viet Kieu or office workers with high incomes.

Some shops reported that, even though the products are very attractive, purchases remains low. Loan, the owner of jewelry shop in District 1 explained: “Many curious people visit the shop to see the diamonds, but they do not buy them because of their overly high prices”.

Artificial colored diamonds are 3-4 times more expensive than white diamonds. A 4mm white diamond is priced at 200,000-300,000 dong, while a colored diamond sells at one million dong.

“Many people do not want to spend such a big sum of money to buy them,” she added. “If they get tired of it, they cannot sell it.”

Duong Binh, Director of Ngoc Long Chau Company, a big distributor of the colored diamonds, maintained that they have been imported from Europe and circulating on the market since mid-June. The diamonds have quality assessment certificates just like natural diamonds and each has a code that corresponds to the code on the certificate. The certificate provides all necessary information about the diamond, including size, thickness and other indexes.

Though artificial colored diamonds have been selling in HCM City, many people, including gold shop owners, do not know about much about them.

Thu, the owner of a gold shop at An Dong Market said: “I have never heard about them. I really want to see the products.”

According to Nguyen Van Hai, Deputy General Director of Sacombank (SBJ), the product now sold as artificial colored diamonds are, in fact, just a kind of cubic zirconia. “This is definitely not an artificial diamond,” he asserted.

He detailed that artificial diamonds are mostly used in industries to make optical products or electronic chips. Artificial diamonds have also appeared on the jewelry market, but in small quantities and small sizes.

Sharing the same view, Nguyen Thi Cuc, Deputy General Director of PNJ, argued that these so-called diamonds are just artificial stones and that artificial diamonds have been overvalued. This kind of product mostly targets clients who love precious stones, but do not want to pay too much for jewelry products.
