Aquino impressed by Vietnam stride in rice production

President Aquino said Tuesday the Philippines has much to learn from Vietnam when it comes to rice production, which the Vietnamese have mastered from techniques learned from the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.

Aquino said he intends to exchange knowledge and experiences with Vietnam to help the Philippines solve its own woes.

“More importantly, on the flight from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi, you will notice their agriculture production really seems to be something worth emulating. There’s a dearth of areas left vacant. Everything’s abundant, the water system seems to be really, really good,” he told reporters in an interview at the Grand Plaza Hotel.

“For 35 years from their last conflict… the strides that they have gained, the peace and security they have nurtured, have enabled them to be our major crutch in terms of our own food security. So why can we not learn so many things from them?” he added.

Despite the Philippines being host to the IRRI, the Philippines is the world’s top rice importer, Vietnam being one of its major sources of the staple.-inquirer.net
