$100m invested for plywood plant
Vina Eco Board Co Ltd on Wednesday began construction of a $100 million plywood manufacturing plant in the Mekong Delta province of Long An.
The factory, covering 20 hectares in Phu An Thanh Industrial Park in Ben Luc District, will become one of the largest facilities in the woodworking industry in Vietnam with an annual output capacity of 250,000 cubic meters.
“The project is expected to be finished and test-run next November. It will be operational in 2012, using wood from cajuput, eucalyptus and fruit trees in the province,” said Soichiro Kitamura, general director of the company.
The factory will recruit over 200 workers and export part of its output.
Vina Eco Board Co. is a joint venture between Japan’s Sumitomo Forestry Group and Sumitomo Forestry in Singapore.
Sumitomo Forestry is active in trade, wood processing, real estate and afforestration. The group has 40,000 hectares of forest in Japan and another 25,000 hectares in other countries.
