Vietnam may have to import 3B cbm of gas per Year by 2015

Vietnam may have to import around three billion cubic meters of gas a year in order to feed increasing domestic demand for electricity production, industries and cooking gas by 2015, an official said at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City on September 8.

Do Van Hau, deputy general director of PetroVietnam Gas Corp (PV Gas) – a major gas producer in Vietnam, was cited by the Thoi bao Kinh te Sai Gon online newspaper as saying that the nation would need up to 17 billion cubic meters of gas a year by 2015 but PV Gas is forecast to supply only 14 billion cubic meters per annum.

The gas producer is making a plan to import around three billion cubic meters of gas annually in the next years to offset the possible shortfall, Hau attributed.

This year, PV Gas plans to supply around 8.5 billion cubic meters of gas as input material for production of 36 billion kWh of electricity a year, or 40% of the national total power output; of 800,000 tons of fertilizer, of 100,000 tons of gasoline and 700,000 tons liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), he noted.

Experts of oil and gas industry said Vietnam has estimated oil and gas reserves of around six billion cubic meters; and the nation found around 1.3 billion cubic meters, he said, elaborating that the potential is very plentiful in localities in the central region including Danang, Dong Hoi and Quang Binh but gas quality is not good due to high CO2 infection.

He added that PV Gas is continuing gas appraisals in the central region so as to start drilling first gas well in 2011.
