New bridge to carry traffic across Son La’s Da River

The Pa Uon Bridge, a major connection across the Da River in northern mountainous Son La Province, will officially open to traffic this month, announced the Ministry of Transport.

Director of the bridge’s Construction Management Board Nguyen Quoc Binh said the 740 billion dong or ($39 million) bridge would be the closest connection between Son La and Lai Chau Provinces.

It would provide an essential transportation route for construction of the Lai Chau hydro-electric power project and contribute to the socio-economic development of the northwest region, he said.

Binh said the 1,273-metre-long bridge was built to withstand a level 8 earthquake.

Bridge construction began in May, 2007. Its final span was connected in April.
