Basa trade name to be used for tra and basa catfish export

Under the Decision No 1921/QLCL-CL1 issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, from December 31, all tra and basa catfish products for export must use the basa trade name on the package.

Over 150 countries and territories have imported the catfish, therefore local exporters need to list scientific and trading names of the catfish in each country to be granted licence for export, said deputy Head of Nafiquad, Nguyen Nhu Tiep.

Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) have now directed local exporters to use basa as trade name as it would create a trademark for Vietnamese tra and basa export sector.

Under US’s Farm bill 2008, sheatfish manufacturers in America had asked U.S Department of Agriculture use Vietnamese imported tra and basa catfish under the common name of “catfish”, therefore, basa as trading name for tra and basa catfish was essential, VASEP added. – TBKTSG
