Additional 1.2m tonnes of rice for export purposes

Ministry of Industry and Trade cooperated with ministry of agriculture and rural development to hold a meeting about the rice export situation in late 2010. The meeting was organised on August 31, 2010.

According to the reports, the rice exporters have already signed export contracts with total volume of 6.2 million tonnes. From the beginning of the year up to August 25, 2010, Vietnam reported exporting over 4.75 million tonnes of rice, gaining total export turnover of $2 billion, up 8.9 percent against the same period of last year.

In August only, the Vietnamese firms exported over 813,000 tonnes of rice, worth more than $302 million, in comparison with the same period of last year of over 460,000 tonnes. The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) announced that there were about 1.2 million tonnes of commercial rice for exporting purposes.

In the world market, the rice export price has increased by three times with total increase of about $50 per tonne during August.
